Bioclimatic vs aluminium pergola

Bioclimatic vs aluminium pergola

Which option is right for your Costa Blanca terrace? A technical, economic and practical comparison.

Both solutions - a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable louvres and an aluminium pergola with a fixed or sandwich-panel roof - solve the same basic need: creating a permanent shaded area on your terrace or garden. But they behave very differently against sun, rain, wind and your budget. This guide explains how each system works, when the price jump is worth it, and what we would choose case by case.

How each system works

Bioclimatic pergola

Aluminium structure with rotating roof louvres that tilt between 0° (closed, waterproof) and 135° (open, maximum ventilation). The electric motor is controlled via remote, app, or rain/wind sensor. A perimeter gutter collects rainwater and drains it through the columns. Modular sizing, combinable with side glass curtains and with integrated LED lighting, heaters and speakers.

Aluminium pergola with fixed roof

Aluminium structure with a permanent roof: insulating sandwich panel, translucent polycarbonate, or tensioned fabric. It doesn't rotate. Some versions include a partial sliding roof or retractable canopy, but they don't offer the fine bioclimatic control of louvres. Simpler and quicker installation, substantially lower price.

Costa Blanca climate context

On the Costa Blanca we have three climate factors that make the difference: very high UV in summer (index 10–11 in July), occasional levante winds with gusts over 80 km/h, and concentrated rain events (the gota fría). A bioclimatic pergola actively manages all three: you close the louvres when it rains and open them after; tilt to shade at midday and open to ventilate at sunset. A fixed pergola shades well but doesn't ventilate, and some models trap heat if the roof isn't breathable.

Year-round use

The critical difference is winter use. A bioclimatic with louvres closed + side glass curtains + integrated heater turns the terrace into an additional living space through the whole coastal winter. A fixed sandwich-panel pergola also insulates well, but you can't "open the roof" on sunny winter days (which are frequent here). If your goal is a terrace that is usable 12 months a year, the bioclimatic wins clearly.

Price orientation

Price depends on surface area, RAL colour, motorisation and extras. Indicatively: a 3×4 m bioclimatic pergola with radio motor, rain sensor and perimeter LED typically sits between €4,500 and €7,000 installed. A 3×4 m fixed aluminium pergola with sandwich panel runs €2,200 to €3,500 installed. The bioclimatic premium is recouped in real year-round usage.

Maintenance

A fixed aluminium pergola needs little more than periodic cleaning. A bioclimatic pergola needs an annual or biennial check of motor, end-stops, seals and louvre watertightness. We offer an optional maintenance contract; if you prefer DIY, we walk you through what to check.

Motorisation and smart-home integration

All current bioclimatic models are motorised as standard. The radio motor (Somfy RTS/io, Becker, equivalent) is controlled via wireless remote and is smart-home compatible (HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa via io/RTS bridge). The rain sensor automatically closes louvres when it detects drops; the wind sensor opens them to reduce load in strong gusts. Dimmable perimeter LED, infrared heaters and outdoor speakers can all be added.

Which do we recommend for you?

Go bioclimatic if…

You want to use the terrace 12 months a year, you like the tech (app, automation, smart-home integration), your community allows motorised installs, and your budget accommodates the premium. Ideal for villas in Orihuela Costa, Cabo Roig, Campoamor and premium residential terraces in Alicante city.

Go fixed aluminium if…

You prioritise price and minimal maintenance, or you need to cover a parking area, rural dining spot or secondary terrace where fine sun control isn't critical. Solves 80% of cases with 40% less investment.

Recent projects of ours that illustrate each decision:

Cabo Roig villa - bioclimatic

5×4 m bioclimatic pergola over the pool, radio motor, rain sensor and integrated LED. Client uses the zone 10–11 months a year.

Los Balcones villa - fixed aluminium

4×3 m sandwich-panel fixed pergola over the barbecue area. Near-zero maintenance since 2022, perfectly integrated into the garden.

Benidorm penthouse - bioclimatic + glass curtains

4×4 m bioclimatic with folding glass curtain sides. Daily use in spring, summer and autumn; closed with heater in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, provided the louvres are well levelled and the seals are in good condition. The built-in perimeter gutter drains water through the columns. We recommend installing a rain sensor so the louvres close automatically if precipitation is detected.

A well-installed bioclimatic (correctly anchored to the foundation) handles gusts of 110–130 km/h with louvres open (smaller exposed surface). A fixed pergola always presents the same wind resistance; in windy zones the dead weight and fixings need extra attention.

Yes, and it's a common combination. Frameless glass curtains let you close off sides while keeping the view. They can be added to both bioclimatic and fixed pergolas provided the structure supports the top fixing.

Entry-level bioclimatics start around €3,500 installed for small sizes (3×3 m) with a basic motor. Below that price be cautious: it's usually thin aluminium, plastic seals and mechanisms that fail early.

In most Alicante municipalities yes, because they're fixed ground-anchored structures. See our planning-permission guide for the municipality-by-municipality detail. We handle the procedure for you as part of the quote.

The aluminium structure has a service life of decades (20+ years with minimal maintenance). The bioclimatic motors and electronics have a service life of 8–15 years depending on quality; they're replaceable without touching the structure.
